Limbe: One killed, others injured as soldier opens fire in nightclub.

Arrested suspected perpetrator of the shooting

One person was killed in the wee hours of May 12 and several others injured after a soldier of the Rapid Intervention Battalion, BIR, whose only name we got as Chief Sergeant Sanda, opened fire in a nightclub in Limbe, Fako Division of the South West Region.

The shooting, said to have been carried out with an M21 rifle and multiple loaded magazines, claimed the life of one individual and left several others gravely wounded.

The incident unfolded at approximately 3:30 a.m. when Chief Sergeant Sanda stormed the nightclub. Without warning, he indiscriminately opened fire on the crowd, targeting innocent bystanders.

Tragically, one individual was killed in the onslaught, while others sustained severe injuries. They were immediately rushed to nearby medical facilities for medical attention.

Sources are quoted as having said Chief Sergeant Sanda, who was arrested after committing the act, claimed responsibility for his heinous action, citing revenge for a comrade killed by separatist fighters.

Following the bloodshed, law enforcement officers later on moved to apprehend the suspected perpetrator, who was subsequently taken to custody and transported to the Limbe gendarmerie for interrogation.

The tragic events of Sunday morning came in the wake of heightened tensions and escalating hostilities between government forces and separatist fighters.

Just days before, on Friday May 10, a Gendarmerie Brigade Commander and some of his subordinates fell victim to a deadly ambush orchestrated by separatist fighters between Mamfe and Eyomujock in Manyu Division of the South West Region.
