2025 presidentials: Cavaye urges stakeholders to exercise restraint, patriotism.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, has challenged election stakeholders to exercise restraint, as the country looks forward to organising the presidential election this year.

Hon Cavaye Yeguie was speaking Tuesday June 10 as he opened the June Ordinary Session of Parliament.

The opening plenary was attended by members of government, led by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Dr Chief Joseph Dion Ngute.

A host of members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Yaounde, also attended the session.

While opening the session, the House Speaker urged electoral stakeholders, especially political actors, to exercise restraint and patriotism, ahead of the presidential election.

He also urged them to act responsibly as the much-awaited presidential election draws near.

According to Rt Hon Cavaye, the election, which is expected in October 2025, is generating a lot enthusiasm in the country and beyond.

“In the face of such enthusiasm, I will never relent to appeal to all stakeholders in the election to exercise restraint, act responsibly and with patriotism,” he said.

Cavaye insisted that: “We must not forget that Cameroon will continue to exist after October 2025 and would need the same stakeholders to overcome present and future challenges”.

He appealed to all actors to ensure the October 2025 presidential election is conducted in a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

Need for massive voter registration

According to the House Speaker, the October 2025 poll provides Cameroon an opportunity to showcase the country’s ingrained capacity to organise major events, including the organisation of elections.

“The October 2025 presidential election would also afford our country the opportunity to assert the political maturity of Cameroonians and further solidify Cameroon's democratic base,” he said.

Drumming calls for massive registration of potential voters on the electoral registrar, he stressed that having a good turnout in the October election remains a major challenge for Cameroon to overcome.

“Besides, a good turnout in the October presidential election will serve as a template for voters’ civic responsibility and mass political participation. However, only those duly enrolled in the electoral register are eligible to vote,” Hon Cavaye sounded.

He then exhorted compatriots of voting age to seize the opportunity given to them by law, to enroll massively on the electoral register in order to be eligible to perform their civic duty at the appropriate time.

Perfecting ID card issuance

Stating that the possession of a valid national identity card is indispensable for getting enrolled on the electoral register, Hon Cavaye called on Cameroonians without the vital document to take advantage of the new delivery system.

In this regard, Hon Cavaye saluted authorities in charge of issuing the National ldentity Card for implementing innovations ordered by the Head of State.

“It is by virtue of innovations introduced that the task of issuing identity cards is no longer herculean. But while the process of issuing identity cards is not yet perfect, we are reliably informed that the new system is being developed with equanimity,” he propounded.

He stressed that the new measures introduced are highly commendable as they have “significantly reduced the deadline for getting National ldentity Cards issued”.

He also exhorted all political elite, especially parliamentarians, to show generosity and true militancy by helping needy compatriots to get National ldentity Cards to facilitate their enrollment on the electoral register.
