David Koulbout Aman: Assassination or suicide?.

David Koulbout Aman

The shocking discovery of retired superscale civil administrator, David Koulbout Aman, lifeless in his bedroom in the locality of Ngolanga’a,  Nkol-afamba Subdivision, Mefou and Afamba Division of the Centre  Region, in the afternoon hours of Monday, has raised more questions than provide answers.

Koulbout was found in a space which sources said is his bedroom. His back was against the wall and his hands crossed, his legs stretched and part of his face shattered, apparently through gunshots.

Information relating to the incident swept across the nation, living many in administrative units wherein Koulbout served as Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, in disbelief.

A team of security forces was immediately dispatched to the home of the deceased retired administrator. Yet, as we took to press last night, nothing official had filtered relating to the circumstances under which a gun coughed ending the life of Koulbout.

Images later made rounds on social media, showing a rifle laying in front of the blood-stained body of Koulbout. The scene of the incident with blood splashed all over his body and other items such as boxes in the bedroom, many are saying, calls for thorough investigations.

While some are alleging that the retired administrator may have committed suicide, others are saying there is also a possibility that he might have been assassinated. In the wake of the multiple views on the tragic discovery, other accounts have also emerged.

Some reports surfaced at nightfall Monday, alleging that Koulbout shot himself on the head before dying in the pool of his own blood.

The same narratives hold that gunshots were heard in the bedroom of the deceased, moments after he had taken his lunch.

Other acquaintances of the deceased said he showed no signs of being under any pressure and was living life happily and peacefully.

As at the time we went to press last night, security officers who stormed Koulbout’s residence were said to still be at the scene, getting details to aid investigations.

Koulbout lastly served as Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Mifi Division in the West Region. He managed Mifi, which makes up the heart of the West Region, from January 2021, until he was sent on retirement in January 2024. He is said to have packed into his home in the later part of last year.

The governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka, who was Koulbout’s immediate boss before he went on retirement, in a telephone conversation with The Guardian Post last night, described him as a calm and experienced administrator.

Governor Awa Fonka told The Guardian Post that the Mifi Division and the West Region in general are in shock and consternation, following news of his tragic demise.

He said the last he heard of Koulbout was when he reached to him on January 1, 2025, to wish him and other administrators of the West Region Happy New Year.

Snippet of his career

It should be recalled that the late senior administrator held the record of having received an emergency posting in September 2016, to administer the Dja and Lobo Division of the South Region.

President Biya had signed the decree posting Koulbout to Sangmelima while out of the country. He was installed on September 30, 2016, in replacement of Bernard Mane Mba, who was not present to hand over to him.

That is how Koulbout managed the Division of origin of the Head of State and Meme Division in the South West Region at the same time for several months. He administered Meme from June 2010 to September 2016.

Across the South West Region, Koulbout was known for his extensive stay as SDO for Meme Division. He handled several dicey situations, including even elections that saw the opposition Social Democratic Front, SDF, making-in routes across the five Subdivisional councils in the Division. The deceased also played a key role in handling compensation for the tarring of the Meme section of the Kumba-Mamfe road.

He also battled the issue of the grabbing of State land and several chieftaincy squabbles in Meme. With a career spanning at least 30 years, Koulbout also served as Prefect of the Mayo-Danay Division of the Far North Region and SDO of Bamboutos Division in the West Region.

Koubout was known for his humane administrative approach and accessibility, especially to the common man. Those who know him talk of his open-door policy in handling difficult matters.
