The University of Buea, UB, has awarded the prestigious honour of a ‘Doctor Honoris Causa’ to distinguished business magnate and philanthropist, Kate Kanyi-Tometi.

The degree, titled Doctor of Business Management (honoris causa), was given to her during the 26th convocation ceremony of the university.

UB officials said it is in honour of her generosity in supporting the education of young Cameroonians in the institution.

During the award ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Horace Ngomo Manga, said Dr Kate Kanyi-Tometi had distinguished herself with her generosity.

“This is a businessperson who has distinguished herself with her generosity and we are happy that the generosity is tilted towards the educating of young people by offering scholarships of 50,000 FCFA per student,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor said the laureate, through the Kate Kanyi-Tometi Excellence Fund at the University of Buea, was transforming lives and giving hope to the needy, poor and other needy persons.

The eligibility criteria for the scholarship, he said, followed a holistic approach that reinforces her concern for the marginalised, destitute and those on the lower ladder of society.

Prof Ngomo said her largesse was worth celebrating by the institution whose students she has dedicated resources to support.

“Her scholarship scheme does not only target those who are doing well academically, but also persons living with disabilities. So these are the kind of people to be celebrated because we have a short supply of such people in our community,” the Vice Chancellor stated.

The recipient of the honoris causa degree is the vision-bearer and benefactor of the Kate Kanyi-Tometi Excellence Fund, which is a partnership between the sponsor, Kate Kanyi-Tometi and the University of Buea.

It is aimed at rewarding exceptional students who demonstrate outstanding intellect, exemplary personal discipline, and positive contributions to the community. This empowers them to continue making a positive difference in the world.

The fund dedicates 50 million FCFA annually to be distributed to awardees without any administrative cost. The beneficiaries include students from all the colleges, faculties and schools of the University of Buea.

The fund, according to the Vice Chancellor, has enabled students to achieve their academic goals as they stand to benefit from both President Biya’s excellence award as well as the Kate Kanyi-Tometi Excellence Fund.
