At visit to Buea: Wum mayor urges indigenes of Subdivision to contribute to dev't back home.

The Mayor of the Wum Council in Menchum Division of the North West Region, Dighambong Anthony Mvo, has challenged indigenes of Wum Subdivision resident in Buea and its environs to work for the development of the municipality.



Mayor Dighambong made the call in Muea and Buea during separate visits carried out on Saturday January 25 and Sunday January 26 respectively.

The aim of the visit, the mayor said, was to meet the people of his municipality resident in Buea. The visit to Buea was the first lap of his countrywide tour to sensitise indigenes of Wum Subdivision ahead of the municipality’s 75th anniversary to be celebrated in April this year.

His visit to Muea and Buea, provided the mayor the opportunity to listen to the challenges faced by his people. Those present at the meetings, narrated numerous challenges inhibiting them from going back to Wum.

They cited lack of electricity, deplorable state of the road and many other challenges. After listening to the people, the mayor disclosed that he working with the government to ensure that the challenges cited could be resolved. 

He revealed that Wum Council would be celebrating its 75th anniversary in April 2025. He said the anniversary will provide a unique opportunity for top government officials to experience the deplorable road.

In this light, he said the anniversary would be celebrated under the distinguished patronage of the Head of State, Paul Biya. The president’s representative, he said will carry the worries of the people of Wum to the highest quarters on the day.

He expressed his desire for the government to recognise the efforts of the people of Wum by providing them the needed facilities. 

“…we as Wum people have shown our interest and commitment to the state of Cameroon by giving them peace and I think it is time for the government to ensure we have roads and electricity because Wum has been without electricity for over six years,” the mayor said.

Speaking further, the mayor informed his people of the ongoing construction of market sheds, low-cost housing and a state-of-the-art town hall in Wum. 

He added that the council intends to grade the main axis of the town beginning next week ahead of the anniversary to ease movement in the city.

Support to construction of Aghem community halls

During the visits to South West Region, Mayor Dighambong supported the construction of Aghem community halls in Muea and Buea with 200,000 FCFA and 750,000 FCFA respectively. 

Speaking to the press, the mayor said the support was to ensure that Aghem people have a befitting structure. 

“I supported the construction of the hall because I believe my people should have a befitting place where they can gather every day or week” he explained.

He has saluted the efforts of his people for initiating the construction of befitting structures for their daily, weekly or monthly meetings.

Such initiatives, he said boosts the image of his people out of Wum, demonstrating their enterprising nature. In this light, he challenged them to also take such initiatives to the village.

“The numerous civil servants working in Wum and guests who will attend the 75th anniversary celebrations can rent such structures,” he said.

Responding to the Mayor’s message, Aji Jude, the family head of the Aghem community in Buea, said his people welcomed the mayor’s message of unity, peace and love. He said without peace and unity, there would be no development. 

“…we, as indigenes of Wum must embrace peace, love and unity to ensure our development and build our nation,” the family head noted.

On her part, Kang Elizabeth, former first Deputy Mayor of Wum Council and spokesperson of Aghem women, said such a visit provided a rare opportunity to motivate Aghem women in Buea Subdivision for the development of Wum.

“…it was important to arouse the emotions of the women towards development and tell them what we want because politics is a game of interest. I am of the SDF and he is of the CPDM, but if he is doing something good for our people, my role is to support him. Our common goal is the welfare of our people, which is why we are here today,” he said.
