Yaounde: Two killed, one in critical condition after taxi crushed by truck.

At least two persons are reported dead after a container truck fell on a taxi in Yaounde on Wednesday, January 29. The incident occurred around the Carrefour MEEC neighbourhood.

It involved a speeding container truck transporting a cargo of fresh fish and a taxi.

Eyewitnesses recount that the accident occurred when the truck suddenly lost its control, crashing falling on a taxi.

Two passengers on board the taxi are said to have died on the spot while one other, a seven-year-old boy, and the driver of the cab, survived.

According to an eyewitness, the impact was severe causing the taxi to be destroyed beyond recognition by the truck.

One eyewitness present at the scene disclosed to the media that: “The truck driver was already in front when the taxi driver tried to bypass the truck and as the truck driver was trying to slow down, it is like the brake failed or and the only thing we heard after that was a sound. When we went closer, we discovered that the container was lying on the taxi”.

The emergency service of the Firefighting brigade rushed to the scene of the incident to rescue the trapped passengers. The lifeless bodies of the two passengers were later pulled out.

Speaking to the press, the taxi driver poured prises on God for saving his life. The taxi driver said: “I want to thank God almighty for saving my life. As I was going to Mokolo from Carrefour MEEC, I just saw a truck that was carrying the 40 fit container reversing. All of a sudden, it fell on my taxi”.

The victims involved in the accident whose identities have not been released yet where immediately taken to the Yaounde Central Hospital Mortuary. For his part, the young man who sustained severe injuries was rushed to hospital for treatment.
