The Director General of Cameroon Water Utilities Corporation, CAMWATER, Dr Blaise Moussa, has assured residents of Ngousso, a neigbourhood in Yaounde that efforts are being made to restore the proper flow of water in the locality.

His assurance followed the destruction of the DN 800 pipeline, which had suffered a hydraulic shock and burst open earlier this week, causing huge material and human loss.

Dr Moussa was speaking to the state broadcaster, CRTV, after a working visit to the area. The visit was to supervise repair works and condole with the victims of the incident. He was accompanied by some staff of his institution.

During the field visit, the CAMWATER boss personally supervised the excavation, water drainage, and exposure of the damaged pipeline, a task made particularly complex by the substantial volume of water that needed to be controlled before replacing the affected section.

He said despite the challenges, notable progress has been made, paving the way for mechanical repairs to fully restore water supply to the impacted areas.

He said while water distribution has been partially restored through network adjustments, full service is yet to be reinstated.

To further assess the damage, he announced the setup of a special commission that was expected to begin work on Wednesday, January 29, conducting a thorough inventory of homes and areas affected by flooding.

Apart from the technical inspection, the CAMWATER Director General took time off to meet with affected residents, offering reassurance and listening to their concerns.

He expressed deep compassion for those impacted by the incident, explaining the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event.

Committed to providing relief, he issued specific instructions to his teams to accelerate social assistance measures for the affected families.

The official acknowledged the calm and cooperative attitude of the local population, whose support greatly facilitated the work of the technical teams.

The utility company emphasised that this collective resilience was crucial in overcoming the crisis and reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the situation swiftly.

Furthermore, the DG expressed appreciation for the involvement of key stakeholders in ensuring a prompt response to the crisis.

Special recognition was given to the Yaounde V Council for its swift and active intervention alongside CAMWATER’s teams on the ground.

He reassured residents that all necessary measures are being taken to restore full water supply as quickly as possible while ensuring the well-being of those affected by the incident.
