Douala: Woman arrested for abusing, chaining seven-year-old niece.

Rachel Motti

A woman, whose name The Guardian Post got as Rachel Motti, has been remanded in custody after a video showing a young girl tied up and chained, circulated on social media.

The viral video had sparked widespread shock in Douala, as the child, seven, questioned by police officers, revealed that her aunt was responsible for the abuse.

Wailing, the girl, whose only name we obtained as Mercy, had alerted neighbors who immediately informed the police.

The incident occurred in Nkolbong neighborhood near Yassa, Douala III Subdivision.

When questioned, Favour, 14, Motti’s daughter, told investigators that Mercy stayed away from home for four days after being sent on an errand on August 28, 2025, fearing punishment.

Upon her return on August 31, Mercy was reportedly punished as she tried to escape. Her aunt, Motti, tied her to a swing with chains and fortified it with two padlocks.

“The next morning, my mother left for work and forgot to tell anyone that the key was hidden under the mattress,” Favour said.

Neighbours heard Mercy’s cries and alerted the police, leading to her rescue.

“My mother did not just beat, she was angry…that was why she beat Mercy and tied her up because she noticed that she had packed her bags to escape from home. My mother said if she didn’t correct her, she would grow up to be unreasonable...when my mother is angry, she beats severely," Favour said.

Neighbours say it was not the first time Motti was inflicting pain on children.

“We have repeatedly confronted her and her husband about the way she treats children,” a resident, named Picasso, told reporters.

Mercy, the daughter of Motti’s half-sister, is now receiving care at the Japoma District Hospital.

Dr Obam Assam Charles Armel, Director of the hospital, confirmed the child showed clear signs of chronic abuse citing multiple contusions, generalised pain, repeated maltreatment and dehydration.

Mercy is also receiving physical and psychological care. Authorities have confirmed that Motti is a serial offender, though her motives remain unclear.

The case has raised questions about child protection in Douala, highlighting the need for vigilance within communities.

In a statement, the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, MINPROFF, Prof Marie Therese Abena Ondoa, condemned the chaining of the seven-year-old girl.

The member of government was categorical that it is “unacceptable”.

She said the act violates children’s dignity and rights. The minister has appealed to the general public to report abuses via toll-free number 116.

She has also urged parents to act responsibly, especially as the new school year approaches.
