Douala airport validates technical, architectural orientations for renovation.

Officials during meeting in Douala

The ambitious renovation and expansion project of the Douala International Airport has reached a decisive stage with the validation of the technical, architectural and operational orientations for the effective start of the project.

A meeting to validate the orientations of the project was held in Douala from November 11 to 13, 2025. It was attended by engineers, architects, technicians, and financial partners for the official presentation of the Detailed Preliminary Design known in French as Avant-Projet Détaillé, APD.

Architects, urban planners, designers, and engineers from Europe, Africa, and Cameroon reviewed every component of the future terminal, from passenger flow to baggage claim, including interior design, air conditioning, electricity, and commercial spaces, with everything projected and discussed.

The core objective of the session was to present and validate the main technical, architectural, and operational options that have been selected.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 136th session of the Board of Directors of the Airports of Cameroon, ADC SA company, with the Directors able to discover the 3D model of the future air terminal.

During the meeting, the General Manager, Thomas Owona Assoumou, presented a progress report that values the project at 95 billion FCFA, of which 75 billion FCFA excluding taxes is financed by ADC and its major partner, the French Development Agency, and 20 billion FCFA to be covered by the State for taxes and duties.

The project’s two main components involve the expansion of the aeronautical pavements including runways, taxiways, aprons, awarded to the Chinese company, CHEC, for an amount of 10 billion FCFA including all taxes, with works expected to begin before the end of the year for a duration of 12 months.

The second component, as disclosed by the Douala International Airport, involves the renovation and expansion of the passenger terminal, scheduled to start in June 2026, with an estimated work duration of 24 and 30 months.

Reassuring the partners and those present of a modern and efficient renovation to meet international standards, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Fritz Ntoné Ntoné, said “this strategic project will be carried out according to international standards and will allow Douala to position itself as a modern and efficient airport platform in Central Africa”.

With the project underway to make Douala airport a hub worthy of the country’s regional ambitions, Douala International Airport disclosed that its technical partners for the project include APAVE, AMPI, Veritas, TPF, AFD and representatives of public administrations, who will formulate their observations to fine-tune the project before its final approval.
