The Embassy of the United States of America, USA, to Cameroon, has made a renewed pledge to modernize the higher education system in Cameroon and strengthen bilateral ties.

The commitment was made Wednesday.

This was during a high-level policy and partnership dialogue the Embassy convened in Yaounde.

It was attended by the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy, John G. Robinson, and the Inspector General of Academic Affairs at the Ministry of Higher Education, MINESUP, Prof Marcel Laurent Fouda Ndjodo.

Also in attendance at the day-long event were Rectors, Vice-Chancellors, university founders and senior government officials.

The Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy stated that the partnership dialogue was a reflection of the shared belief that higher education is one of the most powerful drivers of national development and global cooperation.

Robinson revealed that American higher education has thrived for more than two centuries because of academic freedom, strong governance, and a culture of innovation.

He said Cameroon can tap inspiration from the US success story in its quest for an ambitious, modern, competitive, and globally connected higher education system.

The US Embassy official emphasized that the approach is critical, especially as both countries are taking “the next logical step” of moving from “mutual understanding” to “active collaboration.”

“Today is about providing you with a technical roadmap to global engagement by equipping you with direct access to the platforms used for international academic cooperation,” Robinson said.

The official also underscored the importance of sharing what he described as specialized resources and digital networks.

“We are giving you the tools to make your institutional needs and partnership requests visible to the American academic community,” Robinson added.

Through various sessions like one on “how to proceed”, participants were drilled on the various platforms and how to leverage the Fulbright Program and Education USA support.

Robinson says the goal is to “provide gateways that allow you to initiate your own conversations and transform these high-level discussions into a live reality for your faculty and institution”.

He also reiterated that: “The US Embassy stands ready to serve as the bridge between our academic communities, enabling the connections that will modernize our institution and strengthen our bilateral bonds”.

Prof Fouda Ndjodo, the Inspector General of Academic Affairs at the Ministry of higher Education, who represented Minister Jacques Fame Ndongo, explained that the relationship between Cameroon and the US in the field of higher education is not new.

According to Prof Ndjodo, for decades, the Fulbright Program has been a bridge for intellectual exchange, nurturing generations of scholars who returned to shape the country’s institutions.

He also mentioned that higher education is the engine of national transformation. This conviction, he added, is at the heart of the national development strategy 2030.

“You also know that the US is a technological and scientific power in the world. So, we are a young nation. We must master science and technology in order to foster our development. This is why the partnership with the US is very important for us,” Prof Ndjodo said.

Cameroon-US building formidable alliance

According to Prof Ndjodo, both Cameroon and the US share a convergence of critical realities that demand a unified intellectual response.

The MINESUP official cited several fields of collaboration including; security and counter terrorism, democracy and rule and law, diversity and multiculturalism, climate security, and health security.
