CONAC boss calls for renewed synergy to fight corruption.

Rev Dr Dieudonne Massi Gams: CONAC Chairman

The Chairman of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, CONAC, Rev Dr Dieudonne Massi Gams, has called for renewed synergy as part of efforts to fight against corruption in Cameroon. The CONAC Chairman made the request during an interview he granted State broadcaster, Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV.

The interview was aired during the 3:00p.m. radio news on Monday, February 16. During the interview, the CONAC Chairman acknowledged that many things have improved and added that there are more ameliorations on the way.

Despite commendable efforts made in the fight against corruption over the last few years, Rev Dr Massi Gams reiterated the need for more preventive measures and civic education strategies to change mentalities.

He made it categorically clear that the fight against corruption “is for all Cameroonians”.

He mentioned that education in integrity and ethics is crucial in the fight against corruption and that all actors must be on board to accompany CONAC.

“I feel that education is the best means to fight against corruption and we need the contribution of all structures of this country so as to be really engaged in the fight against corruption,” Rev Dr Massi Gams said.

He added that: “Education on how to be honest, and education on how to manage well. According to the president of the republic, the fight against corruption cannot be done with one person or by one structure”.

It is worth mentioning that during a ceremony to present New Year wishes to CONAC Chairman on Monday, February 2, it was revealed that over 8,100 denunciations related to acts of corruption were received by the institution in 2025 alone.

According to the Permanent Secretary of CONAC, Kowo Ernest, the denunciations were made through channels such as administrative mail, email, hotline call and WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, in 2024, CONAC, in its report said that Cameroon lost a little over four billion FCFA to corruption. Also, 10,250 denunciations were made in 2024, compared to 7,548 denunciations in 2023.

This, it was said, represented an increase of 2,972 denunciations in absolute terms and 39.37% in relative terms.

CONAC insists on declaration of assets

The CONAC boss also insisted on the declaration of assets according to Article 66 of the country’s Constitution.

As per article 66, elected and appointed officials are expected to declare their assets and property upon taking and leaving office to ensure transparency in the fight against corruption.

The CONAC boss said they intend to organise field visits to investigate acts of corruption.

“According to the constitution, they have to declare what they have. So, CONAC is insisting on that so as to have the power  to tell them that you must declare and show how you have gained the riches that you have,” Rev Dr Massi Gams said.
