Constitutional, Electoral Code amendments: Abdouraman Babba advocates sanction votes against MPs.

Abdouraman Hamadou Babba: MDDRC leader

Abdouraman Hamadou Babba, leader of the Movement for the Development and Defense of the Republic of Cameroon, MDDRC party, has advocated sanction votes against Members of Parliament, MPs, whenever elections are organised.

He said they should be punished for adopting bills during the current session of Parliament, amending the Constitution and Electoral Code, to extend their mandate and pave the way for the Head of State to extend the of mandate of municipal councillors.

The MDDRC leader made the call in a recent message, days after the bills were adopted in Parliament, further empowering the Head of State, Paul Biya, with powers to appoint a Vice President and extend the mandate of municipal councillors without any limits.

Abdouraman argued that irrespective of how long the regime in place may decide to extend the mandate, citizens must remain mobilise to vote out the MPs who endorsed such bills, whenever elections are organised.

He disagreed with those who are calling Cameroonians dormant in the face of the laws being voted and changes made to the country’s political setup.

Abdouraman argued that change in Cameroon will still happen through the ballot box and not some spontaneous uprising.

Recalling his experiences with countries such as Egypt and Tunisia, he stated that, change must not come through calls from political leaders. “…I am well positioned to know that a people, although martyred, terrorised and humiliated, does not necessarily rise to the call of political leaders or others,” Abdouraman wrote.

He shared the conviction that “…if Cameroonians one day rise against tyranny, it would not be because a political leader invited them. This would be a spontaneous movement, without leadership”.

The MDDRC leader insisted that the best way to send the Biya regime parking is through the ballot box.

“I continue to think that the only viable way the Cameroonian people have to put an end to the Biya-CPDM regime remains the ballot box,” he wrote.

The man pushing to rally support around himself and his new political formation, wrote that the voting booth is the only place where those crusading change, “…can still speak out without the risk of being shot down, run over by a tank, imprisoned or even being admitted to a psychiatric hospital…”.

Given the challenges facing the nation, he insisted that, stakeholders must invest their energy and resources to vote new members of the National Assembly and senators, whenever the time comes.

He argued that “we must concentrate our energies and financial means to win the upcoming legislative and municipal elections and send back the MPs and Senators who betrayed Cameroon and its people last weekend”.

The Biya regime, according to him, fears elections like a plaque. He however sounded positive that it is “…still bound to organise elections in the coming months”.

Cameroonians, he indicated, should “stop procrastinating and work to be ready as soon as possible”.

Abdouraman referenced the mobilisation around opposition candidate, Issa Tchiroma, during the October 12, 2025, presidential election, as a show of the people’s desire for change.

He insisted that "...the trend can only be strengthened with the transformation of republican institutions into a monarchy orchestrated in recent days”.
