Cycling: Cameroonians struggle in inaugural Burkina Faso women’s tour.

Cameroonian cyclists have consolidated their challenging run at the ongoing inaugural edition of Burkina Faso’s international women’s cycling tour two days into the six-lap competition.

None of the country’s four cyclists have managed to break into the prestigious top three bracket of the general classification table of the weeklong gathering which is assembling some 22 cyclists from five nations.

This is despite the overall spirited fight that the contingent has demonstrated in the competition thus far. Cameroon’s top performer in the competition, Kengne Feudjio Presline Mariol, is presently ranked eighth after registering contrasting performances in the two opening laps.

Feudjio completed the second lap yesterday sitting sixth on the ranking following an excellent push that fell just short of the required mark to make at least the top five on the standing.

She registered the ranking after doing the 68.35km-long lap from Guiba in the centre-southern part of Burkina Faso to Garango in eastern part of the West African country on Wednesday in one hour, 55 minutes and 45 seconds.

The Cameroonian completed the series sitting just over a minute behind the winner of the lap, Burkina Faso’s Bamogo Awa who completed the distance in one hour, 55 minutes and 44 seconds.

Burkina Faso’s Zoungrana Lamousssa ranked second in one hour, 55 minutes and 45 seconds while Djibouti’s Zongo Samiratou placed third after posting a record of one hour, 55 minutes and 45 seconds.

Feudjio’s inability to register her dream rise on the standing after the brilliant performance yesterday had her paying fully for the sluggish performance that she posted in the first lap on Monday when she disappointedly placed 21st.

Overall challenging race

Cameroon’s three other cyclists in the competition finished yesterday’s lap occupying the 10th, 12th and 21st positions respectively.

Obiloma Buana Therese Diamella did the series in one hour, 55 minutes and 46 seconds.  Bengono Nkama Floriane Veronique did one hour, 55 minutes and 50 seconds while Mafoma Rita placed a disturbing 21st after covering the distance in two hours, three minutes and 24 seconds.

Following the run, the trio dropped to holding the 14th, 17th and 19th positions respectively on the general classification while Feudjio placed eighth, some 13 minutes behind the race leader; Bamogo Awa of Burkina Faso who have covered the overall distance in three hours, 26 minutes and 54 seconds,

The third stage takes place this Thursday with the longest lap; the 70.87km-long series from Tenkodogo in eastern part of the country to Zorgho in the central part of the West African nation.

The competition which was launched by Burkina Faso’s Sports minister, Annick Lydie Djouma Pikbougoum, on Monday April 13, ends on Sunday April 19.
