13 killed in Garoua-Maroua road accident.

At least 13 people have died and several others injured, following a road accident on the Garoua-Maroua road axis. Reports hold that the accident occurred in the locality of Badjengo, near Pito in the Far North Region; on Sunday, April 19, 2026.



According to initial reports, the accident involved a passenger bus travelling from the Far North Region. Eyewitness accounts hold that the driver lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and crashed violently into a tree. 

Locals are quoted as having said at least 12 passengers in the bus died on the spot while several others sustained injuries of different degrees.

While the corpses were ferried to a mortuary, the injured were transported to the hospital. As at Monday, April 20, the death toll from the accident had risen by one.

Authorities are said to have praised immediate rescue efforts which helped to minimise the number of deaths. 

Law enforcement officers are said to have assisted in rescue operations and identification of the victims.

According to rescue teams, dozens of injured passengers were pulled from the wreckage, many in critical condition. The same sources noted that, they were promptly transported to nearby health facilities.

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, of Bénoue Division, Oumarou Haman Wabi, was among local authorities who visited the accident scene.

The civil administrator extended condolences to the bereaved families and expressed hope that those injured will recover as soon as possible.

Wabi also took the opportunity to warn against the dangers of reckless driving and the persistent issue of excessive speed on the highways.

“This tragedy is not worth it and it is about time road users become responsible and respect the Highway Code,” he said. 

The administrator also called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations in force.
