European Leagues: Cameroonians suffer mix fortunes on AFCON return.

Mbeumo is Manchester United top scorer with seven goals

Cameroonian footballers suffered mixed-fortunes with their clubs in European Leagues on their return from the 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON.

While some players used their quarter-final exit as fuel to inspire their team to victory, others struggled to impress and succumbed to defeat.

Indomitable Lions forward Bryan Mbeumo was one of the most outstanding players last weekend with his club Manchester United.

Mbeumo was on target as Manchester United defeated Manchester City in a thrilling derby 2-0. This was during matchday 22 of the English Premier League.

The Cameroon international opened the scoring for his team from a swift counter-attack on 65 minutes before teammate Patrick Dorgu sealed the win 16 minutes later.

It was the first game for Mbeumo since his return from the AFCON.

The win ended Manchester United’s four match winless run including three consecutive draws and a defeat.

Speaking after the game, Mbuemo said: “I think it’s above all a team effort. Everyone did their job. Everyone defended, everyone attacked. We may have lacked a bit of luck, especially with the offside calls and certain situations, but overall, I think it was a very good performance”.

Mbeumo’s Manchester United moved up to fifth on the table with 35 points. They face Arsenal in their next game.

Elsewhere in France, Cameroon forward Frank Magri scored and assisted as his club Toulouse thrashed OGC Nice 5-1 on matchday 18 of the Ligue 1.

The striker has not scored since October 2025 when he scored in a 4-0 win against FC Metz.

The win means Toulouse edged closer to a place to earn qualification to play European football next season.

In Spain, defender Enzo Boyomo came off the bench and helped his team to beat Real Oviedo 3-2 during matchday 20 of La Liga.

Boyomo started the game on the bench and replaced Raul Garcia de Haro when the game was 73 minutes old.

Two minutes after he was introduced in the game, Boyomo assisted Ante Budimir to level scores 2-2, 15 minutes to stoppage time.

Boyomo and his teammates later completed their comeback when Victor Munoz scored a stoppage time winner as they moved to 11th position.

Still in Spain, Karl Etta Eyong failed to add to his goal tally as Levante lost 2-0 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Etta Eyong started the game but was substituted at the 66th minute. The defeat had devastating consequences on the team as they dropped to relegation zone, five points from safety.

In Germany, Indomitable Lions forward Christian Kofane and his side Bayer Leverkusen suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Hoffenheim.

Kofane, who was Cameroon’s top scorer at the 2025 AFCON, played 45 minutes after starting from the bench. Despite his presence on the pitch, he failed to record a single shot in the game.

The defeat was the second in a row after the loss to Stuttgart. Kofane and his teammates will be hoping to bounce back in the UEFA Champions League when they face Olympiacos in Greece on January 20.
