Performance: Consultancy firm to begin ranking media organs April ending.

Joly Koum: Initiator of the media ranking

Consultancy group, Peace and Communication Consulting, has announced the imminent start of an initiative which seeks to rank media organs in the country.

Dubbed Indice Media, the consultancy in a communique seen by The Guardian Post, said the initiative seeks to among other things, promote professionalism in the media sector.

The statement signed by the firm’s promoter, veteran journalist, Joly Koum, announced that the first edition of the ranking will be made public at the close of April, the organisation said.

It will be the first time media organs in the country will be ranked by their performance.

In the communique announcing the initiative, the consultancy disclosed that: “As part of the rollout of Indice Media, an evaluation tool developed by Peace and Communication Consulting in partnership with the National Communication Council, aimed at promoting professionalism in Cameroonian media and combating hate speech as well as any other form of media misconduct, monitoring and rating operations of media content are now entering their implementation phase, following an initial phase devoted to the assessment of televised debates”.

The consultancy continued that: “To this end, the media outlets listed…, categorised by type (radio, television, print media, and online media) and arranged in alphabetical order, are subject to monitoring and evaluation by a scientific committee under the coordination of Mr Alain Belibi”.

Composed of renowned journalists and distinguished academics, the committee, it was gathered, carries out its work on the basis of rigorous and transparent criteria.

The results of the evaluation, the group announced, will be published regularly in the form of rankings, starting from the end of April 2026.

Through the initiative, Peace and Communication Consulting said, it was reaffirming its commitment to the sustainable improvement of the quality of media content in Cameroon, in compliance with ethical standards, professional responsibility and the requirements for preserving social peace.

Indice Media, it should be recalled, was flagged off in June 2025. The initiative which aims to encourage professionalism in the dissemination of information in the media was presented to newsmen at a presser in Yaounde.

Speaking at the launch, veteran broadcast journalist, Joly Koum, had explained that the platform is meant to evaluate media content and programmes in a bid to foster professionalism and self-regulation in the media landscape.

“This project is ongoing. Every month, we will produce an analysis and rating sheet of the Cameroonian media,” Koum had said then.

The platform, he disclosed, is made up of a jury of 20 time-tested professionals drawn from the media, academia and communication.

The jury is headed by former broadcast journalist, Alain Belibi. Other members include Alain Blaise Batongue, Susan Bamuh, Evelyne Mengue, Albert Mbida, David Atemkeng, Jean Claude Bilana, Thomas Atenga, Parfait Siki, Junior Binyam, Samson Websi, Valentin Simeon Zinga and Gemnda Buinda.

Speaking at the launch of the platform, senior journalist and journalism trainer, Gemnda Buinda had described journalism as a double-edged sword.

The former Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV journalist had underscored the importance of journalists to remain professional, noting that a journalist can easily become irrelevant in the eyes of the public due to his or her practice.

Buinda said the Indice Media concept is not to punish journalists but to emphasize on the concept of professionalism, responsible practice, respect of journalism ethics and the codes of conduct.
