The Director of the Civil Cabinet at the Presidency, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, has announced the launch of an official digital platform to curb fake news regarding the upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV from April 15 to 18, 2026.

In a statement issued recently, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, announced that the launch of the official digital platform is designed to provide reliable and centralised information on the papal visit for both the public and the media.

The launch of the platforms is to step up efforts to control the flow of information amid a surge in online rumours and misleading content.

The platform is available in French and English, the country’s two official languages, and is supported by dedicated accounts on major social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and Instagram.

It provides detailed schedules, practical information, and organisational guidelines, with the aim of reducing confusion and limiting misinterpretation in a fast-moving information environment.

In the statement, Ayolo said the initiative follows a recent episode that highlighted the spread of misinformation of a viral poster circulating online claiming that access to papal masses in Yaounde, Bamenda, and Douala would require payment ranging from 10,000 FCFA to 100,000 FCFA.

The Apostolic Nuncio in Cameroon quickly denied the claim, reiterating that papal liturgical celebrations are free and open to all. Despite the clarification, the rumour continued to circulate, underscoring the challenges of containing misinformation in the digital age.

By centralising official communication, authorities aim to reduce the space for speculation and manipulation, finding a broader effort to manage messaging around the event with significant religious, diplomatic, and media importance.

Beyond addressing rumours, the platform is to ensure the smooth organisation of the visit and shaping its narrative, as the country prepares for the third papal visit, with Pope Leo XIV’s trip putting the country on the international spotlight.
