Elite One: PWD Bamenda, Aigle on strike over unpaid salaries, bonuses.

Players of North West Region football club, PWD of Bamenda, and West Region side, Aigle Royal of the Menoua, have gone on strike over unpaid salaries and match bonuses.

The players are demanding payment of months of outstanding salaries arrears from by their respective clubs.

Players of PWD of Bamenda refused to train during Tuesday’s training session despite showing up at the Bamenda Proximity Stadium.

They later failed to report for training on Wednesday morning. The players claim they are owed four months of unpaid salaries by club officials and three match bonuses.

An official at the National Union of Cameroonian Footballers, best known as SYNAFOC, confirmed to The Guardian Post that players of PWD of Bamenda are owed four match salaries and match bonuses.

At press time, PWD of Bamenda had not issued any official statement. But an official of the club who spoke The Guardian Post, did not refute the claims.

PWD of Bamenda has three remaining matches to play this season. There are fears that the current financial crisis may impact the team's performances.

Despite being a formidable force during the first round, they have struggled to replicate their form in the second.

They have won only two of their last five fixtures with two draws and a defeat. The Abakwa Boys are winless in their last three matches and currently ranked fifth on the standing with 34points.

The 2020 champions have three matches left to complete the season. They welcome defending champions Colombe Sportive of the Dja and Lobo on June 14 and take on another title contender Dynamo of Douala in their final home fixture of the season. The team’s final match of the season will be away to Aigle Royal of the Moungo on June 28.

In the West Region, players of Aigle Royal of the Menoua on their part announced their suspension from all activities to protest against several months of unpaid salaries.

They voiced their concerns on Tuesday June 9. Over 20 players including Tony Achu, Samuel Echabe and Ronald Gazhac, signed the statement. The players claimed that they were last paid in January.

“We, the players of Aigle Royal of the Menoua, have decided as of this date to cease all team activities if our demands are not addressed,” the players wrote in a statement, adding that: “We are demanding four months of unpaid wages. We have received only one salary since the start of the season”.

Aigle Royal currently sit 10th on the table, six points above the relegation zone.  With the announcement of their suspension from all club activities, it remains unclear if the players will show up for their remaining fixtures.

They welcome Aigle Royal of the Moungo on June 14 on matchday 24. They have two other fixtures against holders Colombe Sportive and Panthere Sportive.

The official from SYNAFOC stated that PWD of Bamenda and Aigle Royal are not the only club whose players are being owed by their clubs.

The Guardian Post gathered from this official that others like Aigle of the Moungo, AS Fortuna are also demanding their salaries while Dynamo of Douala have not been paid since the start of the season.

In their last barometer, SYNAFOC raised a fresh alarm over the salary crisis affecting players in the country’s MTN Elite One, MTN Elite Two, and the Guinness Super League.

SYNAFOC disclosed that in the MTN Elite One, the average salary payment rate stands at 49%. They also said that in the MTN Elite Two, the salary payment rate is 29% with barely four of 16 clubs that are paying their players.

SYNAFOC said the situation is even more critical in the Guinness Super League with the salary payment for players of the women’s first division at a frustrating 0%.
