Elite One: Unisport eye top seat in crunch Coton Sports clash today.

West Region football club, Unisport of the Upper Nkam, will be hoping to reclaim the top seat of the MTN Elite Championship when they face Coton Sport of Garoua today.

The crunch matchday 25 fixture will take place at the Annex of the Roumde Adja Stadium in Garoua, North Region, at 4:00pm.

Unisport will head into today’s fixture knowing that a win will not only help them go back to the top of the Elite One table but also boost their title ambitions with one game left to play before the season ends.

Unisport were dethroned from the leadership position of the league after a damaging 2-0 defeat to Gazelle FA of Garoua during matchday 24 last weekend.

Current Ballon d’Or holder Serge Daura opened the scoring from the spot shortly after the restart while Souley Said sealed the win with 16 minutes remaining.

The defeat, the club’s fifth of the season, dealt a great blow to their quest for the coveted title.

Unisport looked laboured and overpowered by Gazelle FA but will be keen on strengthening their push for their first title since 1996.

They dropped to the third spot of the table level on 49 points with second place Dynamo of Douala and defending champions Colombe Sportive of the Dja and Lobo, who took a significant step to reclaim the trophy.

A win will see Unisport move to 52 points, three points clear of their two title challengers, who will play this weekend.

While Dynamo of Douala, who are chasing a maiden league crown, travel to the North West Region to face PWD of Bamenda, Colombe Sportive host Aigle Royal of the Menoua.

If Unisport fails to win today against Coton Sport, the title race could be over for them on Sunday June 21 but Colombe Sportive and Dynamo must secure victory in their games to make that happen.

This will mean that Colombe Sportive and Dynamo will remain top and second respectively with 52points and a draw in the final game of the season will be enough to see one of them clinch the trophy.

Hosts, Coton Sport, are already out of the title race. Although they are bound to finish another season without a league trophy, they will be looking to better their position on the standings.

It should be noted that Coton Sport, which has won more titles than any club in the country, narrowly lost 1-0 to Unisport during the first leg. This match also offers the opportunity to make amends to fans for the loss.

During the course of the season, Unisport has often lived up to expectations when it mattered on hostile territory.

They defeated Canon Sportive of Yaounde in a seven-goal thriller, defeated Dynamo 2-1 and edged Panthere Sportive of the Nde by a similar score line and even picked up a win against Victoria United 4-2 in Limbe.

Unisport will target a win in this make-or-break fixture and hope to inspire themselves from home fans in their final game of the season to push for a win against Dynamo.

The clash between Coton Sport and Unisport is one of the fixtures to take place at the Annex of the Roumde Adjia Stadium. In the early kick-off game at 2:00pm, home side Gazelle FA entertains Canon Sportif.
