The Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie, is leading Cameroon’s delegation at the Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, AU, on Health.
The member of government is representing the Head of State, Paul Biya, at the gathering which officially opened July 22 in Accra, Ghana.

The summit brings together African leaders, policymakers, health experts and development partners.

Organisers said deliberations will be on pressing health challenges facing the continent and to chart a common course toward stronger and more resilient health systems.

The Extraordinary Session is expected to focus on accelerating efforts to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, in line with global and continental commitments.

Discussions are also expected to address strategies for reducing preventable maternal mortality, strengthening the fight against endemic and communicable diseases, and tackling the growing burden of non-communicable diseases across African countries.

In addition, participants will examine measures aimed at reinforcing health systems, improving access to quality healthcare services, enhancing disease surveillance, and increasing domestic investment in health.

The meeting, we gathered, is seen as a critical platform for fostering cooperation among member states and promote collective action in response to evolving public health challenges.

According to officials, Cameroon’s participation underlines the importance the country attaches to health issues and also showcases the sustained commitment of President Paul Biya to improving the well-being of the population.

Through its participation, Cameroon, officials said, seeks to contribute to discussions and decisions that will shape the future of healthcare delivery and public health governance on the continent.

Beyond the plenary sessions, the Minister Dr Manaouda-led delegation is also expected to engage in a series of high-level consultations and bilateral exchanges to be organised on the sidelines of the event.

The meetings are expected to provide opportunities to share experiences, strengthen partnerships, and explore innovative approaches to addressing Africa’s health priorities.

The outcomes of the Accra summit, are expected to guide future continental actions aimed at achieving better health outcomes and advancing sustainable development across Africa, officials stated.
