Jitzi George Tando new boss of The Guardian Post Washington Bureau.

The Publisher/Editor-in-Chief told the editorial team that Tando is returning to the media house 20 years after, having served as a correspondent in Donga Mantung Division in 2001, when the newspaper was created. 

He said Tando is coming in to boost the team of two correspondents that have already been manning the Washington Bureau of the media house. 

Ngah said the versatile journalist is charged with covering the USA and other North and South American countries. 

“We intend to give more visibility to the works of Cameroonians resident in the US,” Ngah said. 

He said through the Washington Bureau that has been in existence for four years, The Guardian Post also intends to better profile Cameroonians resident in the US for authorities back home to better understand the human resource out there.

“The electronic version of our newspaper is increasingly being subscribed to by compatriots in the US. They are also among top buyers of the newspaper on our website and other digital sales platforms,” he disclosed.

Tando pledges to deliver 

Tando has described his appointment as a “homecoming of sorts,” in a much larger capacity, for a correspondent who once served the media house two decades ago. 

“The appointment marks another significant milestone in my career and opens an entirely new chapter,” Tando stated.

He said the appointment represents a remarkable progression in his career, giving him the avenue to operate from one of the world’s most consequential political capitals.

“Washington is at the heart of American politics, diplomacy and international policy. From the White House and Capitol Hill to the State Department and the numerous diplomatic missions based in the city, Washington provides a strategic vantage point for reporting on developments with implications, not only for the United States but also for Cameroon and Africa,” he said.

Tando’s inspiring career, which has traversed many local and mainstream newspapers, radio broadcasting, corporate communication, political and social commentary, started in 1996, as a passionate student contributor. 

In his early days, Tando reported for local newspapers, including; Political Punch, The Concord, Savannah Echoes and Menemba. 

His passion extended beyond writing, when he took interest in news vending, first in Ndu and later in Bamenda, enabling him gain insights in newspaper business from production to distribution.

In 1998, Tando served as Desk Editor of The Power Info and The Frontier Telegraph newspapers.

He switched to the corporate world, when he joined brewery company, Guinness, in 1999, and worked until 2006, in different capacities, including as Senior Sales Supervisor for Donga Mantung Division.

Within that period, his passion for journalism remained undiminished, as he continued as a freelancer with the now defunct The Herald and Cameroon Post. He also at some point reported for The Post.

In 2013, Tando returned to Ndu, where he assumed another historic role as the pioneer Station Manager of Savannah Frontier Radio, SFR, a community radio station. 

As a community radio manager, he benefited specialised professional training and mentorship from renowned media experts, to further sharpen his skills in the news business. 

In his 30 years career, Tando has nurtured many budding journalists. 

The outspoken journalist, commentator and advocate of social justice, found himself operating in a hostile environment, when the Anglophone crisis broke in 2016, eventually compelling him to leave Cameroon in 2017. 

Despite relocating to the US, Tando’s pen has remained active in news reporting, political analysis, and commentary on social issues. He is a regular guest on leading private television station, Equinox.
