Commentary: Why we are the most widely read, respected.

For one thing, The Guardian Post has not only survived the storms and banana peelings, thrown on its path at birth, but has surmounted them and now comfortably stands among the leaders in the country's print media sector. 

Through hard work, sacrifice, and un undiluted commitment to professionalism, The Guardian Post has not only become the most influential media house in Cameroon but is also the most widely read and respected newspaper in the country and the CEMAC Subregion. 

Sustained by the vision of the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Kristian Ngah Christian, the media organ has, in 25 years, been at the service of citizens, giving a voice to voiceless citizens, contributed to national growth and advanced Cameroon’s nascent democracy.

The Guardian Post's amazing milestones of rising to the top, has not however been a bed of roses. It is a feat that has been achieved through thick and thin, in navigating the turbulent and cash-strapped media environment. 

The challenges were daunting and full of depressing turns and twists. But like Spartans, we refused to give up despite the slippery nature of trials. 

Our strong believe in God, determination, courage, business acumen, integrity, resilience, dedication and focus, brought us this far, even in the face of sabotage.

Why we are the most widely read

The Guardian Post did not become the most widely read and respected media organ in the country and in the CEMAC Subregion overnight. It has not also gotten to the pinnacle of the print media sector because it publishes all seven days of the week. 

Rather, the media organ’s time-tested credibility, professionalism and penchant to unfold truth, justice, balance and fairness in telling stories, have earned it its ever-increasing credibility and readership worldwide. 

It is today the most widely read in the country because of its unshaken resolve to call things as they are, without caring whose ox is gored. 

With its middle-of-the-road editorial policy, The Guardian Post has remained a market place of ideas for all without bias. This has helped the media house to build an unshakable bond with its readers. 

Notwithstanding, in playing its watchdog role, The Guardian Post’s frank, daring and swinging journalism hammer do not stop at calling to order at anyone who fails to live up to the billing. 

It is this proven credibility in the business that The Guardian Post is subscribed and read in all State institutions, diplomatic services, private enterprises and is also among the top sellers on newsstands nationwide. 

The media organ also boosts over 12,000 subscribers of its electronic version from across the globe. 

The Guardian Post, in its 25 years existence, has never been dragged to court for libel or defamation, due to its professional and responsible journalism, meticulous, objective and balanced reporting. 

Unceasing consistency in production, quality delivery 

Consistency in the media industry, where many publications are struggling to survive, has become credibility in itself. 

This is the strong point of The Guardian Post that has unfailingly published and printed all its editions for the past 25 years. 

The Guardian Post’s regularity on the newsstands and daily delivery to subscribers, also make it the most widely read newspaper in Cameroon. 

Even with sharp rise in cost of production materials due to global trade disruptions, the newspaper still manages to sustain its quality and daily printing. 

Internet penetration, which has forced many newspapers to fold up across the country, has not shaken The Guardian Post that is ever ready to adapt to changing times.

The Guardian Post has also stood out in the face of a new phenomenon, where newspapers only produce front pages, which they display on the social media without content.

The media house rather sees technology as added advantage. It has leveraged it to expand its online presence to reach wider audiences far beyond the geographical limits of the printed newspaper.

To stay relevant in a context where news breaks on the social media, The Guardian Post’s creative headlines and investigation on issues of public interest have made it to stay among the most widely read nationwide. 

To stand out as the best in the crowd, the newspaper produces powerful commentaries, and engages straightforward advocacy to right the wrongs of society. Even State personalities and stakeholders have attested openly that The Guardian Post is second to none, when it comes to media advocacy. This adds to periodic features and profiles of those blaring the trail across the globe. 

The Guardian Post not only helped readers to understand what happened, but why it happened and what it means through its exclusive interviews, investigative reports, insightful analyses, compelling human-interest stories and thought-provoking commentaries on topical issues. 

Merited recognition 

The Guardian Post has earned recognition among few respected media organs in the country, not because it is perfect, but because it remains committed to the craft of truthful storytelling and shining light on issues that affect the good of the general public. 

It is for this reason that the media house has in the past 25 years, resisted the temptation of falling into political manipulation or the reckless race yellow journalism. 

The Guardian Post is respected today as a media empire because it has built its credibility as an institution, protected its reputation and perfectly understood its role as the watchdog of society. 

The media organ’s unpredictability has made it to earned the respect it enjoys today. In 25 five years, it has questioned government policies, published stories seen by authorities as uncomfortable and made opposing views heard. 

It is the by refusing to be the mouthpiece of any political party, faction, individual or interest groups that the media house has, through its middle-of-the-road editorial policy, navigated some of the most turbulent periods in reporting, especially the crisis rocking the two English-speaking Regions of the country. 

Aside informing its thousands of readers with undiluted information, The Guardian Post has helped sustained the visibility of Anglo-Saxon journalism in a predominantly French-speaking country.

Many French-speaking Cameroonians and others living in the country see The Guardian Post as a learning tool to polish their English language proficiency. 

Not falling to blackmail, sabotage 

Given its influence and credibility in reporting, the newspaper has directly or indirectly stepped on toes, leading to severe attacks either online or offline.

From accusations of being bribed to report, to production of fake front pages of the newspaper to phishing of its website, The Guardian Post remains unwavering in upholding best journalistic practices, defending the general good and contributing to Cameroon’s evolution and shaping national development.

Make no mistake. We are most widely read and respected, but we think we are not yet there. And “Until we get there", to borrow the quote from Lucius, an American pop band, we will keep desiring to be better in the pursuit of a good journalism, even as we are “Cherished by many, haunted by some but read by them all”.
