ELECAM reveals 252,830 new enrolments on voters register.

This was during a media briefing. According to Dr Essousse, the figure is still provisional as it remains subject to a data-cleaning process. 

“252,830 newly enrolled electors, a figure that still has to be cleaned up,” he said, adding that the provisional register now stands at 8,238,778 potential voters.

According to the elections boss, throughout the exercise, joint commissions responsible for the revision of electoral registers were established and deployed in accordance with legal provisions nationwide.

The work of the commissions, he said, included registering eligible voters, receiving applications for deletion and modification, and carrying out the necessary operations to keep the registers updated.

Dr Essousse said ELECAM also relied on modern technological and logistical resources to improve the efficiency of the registration process. 

“The introduction of more efficient third generation biometric kits in terms of speed, execution, processing of data and power autonomy produced satisfactory results,” he explained.

The technological tools, he added, were deployed to support ELECAM personnel in carrying out registration and data-processing operations more efficiently across the country.

He added that alongside voter registration, the electoral body intensified sensitisation campaigns aimed at encouraging eligible citizens to enrol and existing voters to collect their voter cards.

“Immediately after the launching of this revision, we multiplied sensitisation campaigns targeting the enrolment of potential electors on electoral registers and the withdrawal of voter cards,” Dr Essousse said.

He also recognised the contribution of the media in supporting the electoral process, particularly through public awareness campaigns.

Voter’s card distribution next priority

The election DG explained that with registration now closed, ELECAM’s attention will be shifted to the distribution of voter cards and the cleaning up of the electoral register. 

According to the Director General, teams are currently working in communities to ensure that voters receive their cards.

“…our teams are at work, in quarters, moving from door-to-door and sending SMS to holders of cards not yet collected,” he stated.

He urged citizens whose voter’s cards are already available to collect them from the relevant ELECAM council branches.

According to Dr Essousse, the post-registration phase will also involve the verification and cleaning of the data collected during the exercise. 

ELECAM teams, he said, have been mobilised to carry out the operations in accordance with Sections 78 and 80 of the Electoral Code.

The legal provisions, he detailed, set deadlines for the publication of the different electoral registers. 

The provisional electoral registers, he also noted, are expected to be published no later than October 20, while the national register of voters must be published no later than December 30.

Dr Essousse described the 2026 annual revision as having taken place under satisfactory conditions. He expressed gratitude to the different stakeholders involved in the electoral process.

He thanked the administration, political parties, media organisations and civil society for their collaboration.
