At visit to Kumba: British High Commissioner decorated with prestigious Bafaw title.

The Paramount Ruler of the Bafaw and King of Kumba, His Majesty Senator Nfon Mukete IV Ekoko, has decorated the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Matt Woods, as hunter of the Bafaw tribe.

This was during the diplomat’s visit to the metropolis on Thursday, April 23, 2026.



The Nfon conferred on the UK High Commissioner the prestigious title of ‘Ekpa Lisongo,’ which means ‘the hunter's bag that brings good things’.

Also present during the decoration were; the Senior Divisional Officer, SDO of Meme, Chamberlin Ntou'ou Ndong, Divisional Officers of Kumba, mayors, regional councillors, traditional rulers and notables.

While conferring the title on the British diplomat, the Bafaw monarch said he is now an honourary ambassador of the Bafaw customs and tradition. 

Nfon Mukete said the decoration is in honour of his leadership, strength and protective features. He noted that the British High Commissioner's presence in Cameroon is a reassuring factor and a symbol of development to the community. 

The Nfon said his diplomatic prowess and dedication to fostering ties between Cameroon and the United Kingdom UK embodies the value of oneness.

Commenting on the recognition, the British diplomat expressed delight to have been given such rare honour. 

He used the occasion to laud the excellent diplomatic relationship that exists between Cameroon and his country.

The High Commissioner added that the recognition bestowed on him is remarkable and would be cherished for a long time.

The visit was also marked by a guided tour of the City of Kumba. The British diplomat visited the old Bafaw palace, Government Practicing School GPS Kumba town, St. Paul Nursery and Anglican Primary School, the Kumba Main Market, and the South West Farmers Cooperatives Union, SOWEFCU.

He also had a private audience with the Bishop of Kumba, His Lordship Agapitus Nfon. 

After visiting the schools and other institutions, Woods promised to add value to effect change. He prayed that relations between the UK and the city of Kumba remain alive.

The diplomat hailed the ingenuity and resilience of the population of Kumba in the face of the crisis in the North West and South West Regions.

The diplomat was accompanied by Cleatine Asongwe, Political Adviser at the British High Commission; Michael Kimbi, Head of Business Section at the Embassy.
