Elite One: PWD Bamenda sinks further with fourth straight defeat.

North West Region football club, PWD of Bamenda have continued to struggle in the start of the second phase of the MTN Elite One Championship.

The troubles were exacerbated following a fourth straight defeat in the league for the first time this season.

The Abakwa Boys remained within a win four matches into round two of the league after losing 5-2 to record winners Coton Sport of Garoua.

This was during matchday 17 which took place on Sunday May 3.

PWD of Bamenda started the game with the hopes of ending a three-match losing streak. They had chances but were short of ideas, creation and were outmaneuvered by their host.

Boris Katche, who joined PWD of Bamenda at the start of the season, cancelled Carlos Yougouda opener and thought his team was going to head for the break level on scores but Harrison Djonkep restored the lead for Coton Sport.

The onslaught continued in the second half as Coton Sport dominated and ripped PWD apart. Francois Manguele added a third before Moussa Limane hit a brace to take the game to bed.

Katche later pulled one back 15 minutes to stoppage time but defeat was inevitable.

PWD of Bamenda has been vulnerable in their last four matches. They were a formidable force at the start of the season but have faded form and become a shadow of themselves.

From being rightly regarded as potential league winners, given the range of talents in the team and their results obtained in the first phase of the league, they have continued to drop on the table and could soon find themselves fighting to maintain their top tier status.

The defeat left PWD of Bamenda still without a win since the start of the second phase of the MTN Elite One Championship. They have played four matches with four defeats and dropped to the ninth place with 23 points.

Their record in the second phase of the championship also includes 12 goals conceded. The goals have also dried up for the Abakwa Boys. They have scored four goals.

The team will be hoping to revive their chances of title hopes, although it does not seem within grasp and return to winning ways in their next matches. They are scheduled to play leaders Unisport of Bafang and Fauve Azur at home and a trip to Aigle of the Menoua.

How other teams fared

Victoria United FC edged Gazelle FA of Garoua 1-0 to leapfrog their rivals on the table. Ghangle Rattensi scored the solitary goal.

The matches pitting Canon Sportif and Panthere Sportive and Stade Renard against Colombe Sportive ended goalless.

Elsewhere, Dynamo of Douala secured a 2-1 win at relegation battling Aigle Royal of the Moungo. Yves Mbappe and Jules Armand Kooh were on target for Dynamo while Fred Ekagwu halved the deficit for Aigle.

Ndiforchu Blaise scored a brace to take his goal tally as leading top goal scorer to 12 goals and help his team Aigle Royal of the Menoua to fight back and draw 2-2 against Fauve Azur.

In an early kick-off game, leaders Unisport of the Upper Nkam extended their lead at the top following a convincing 8-0 win over AS Fortuna. The West Region side is now 11 points clear at the top.
