Elite One: Unisport extends lead to 11points.

Unisport of Upper Nkam have widened their lead on the tentative standing of the first division football championship to 11points.

The West Region club took the commanding lead after humiliating AS Fortuna 8nil over the weekend. This was during its matchday 17 fixture in the Elite One showpiece.

The team was particularly offered the opportunity to extend lead after several of its rivals in the title race dropped points during the matchday 17 series which was held on Saturday and Sunday.

Forwards Kouam Mbappe and Achille Fokem scored a brace each to help head coach Laurent Djam’s side hand the relegation-fighting AS Fortuna side the disgraceful beating at the Bafang Municipal Stadium.

Following the victory which was the team’s seventh in its last eight matches in the league, the Bafang-based team tentatively took a 12points lead.

But the side left the doors open for its rivals and defending champions Colombe Sportive of Dja and Lobo to trim the gap back to its original nine points by the close of the match day 17 showdowns.

The South Region flagbearers who clashed with Stade Renard of Melong a day later on Sunday however failed to get things correctly at their end. The side was held to a goalless draw at the Melong Municipal by the home club.

The failure leaves Unisport which is chasing its first league crown in three decades sitting on a comfortable position in the title race nine matchdays to the end of the campaign.

Ndiforchu strikes twice

Blaise Ndiforchu further extended his leadership on the goal scorers’ chart when he scored his 13th and 14th goals of the campaign for Aigle of Menoua during the side’s clash with Fauve Azur in Yaounde.

But the brace which increased the attacker’s overall goal contributions in the league this season to 16 goals in 14 matches, failed to help the West Region team to bag all three points during Sunday’s match.

Fauve Azur held the visiting selection to a 2-2 draw in the game leading to Ndiforchu and Aigle remaining closer to the relegation zone.

The striker who now has 12 goals and four assists in the league and his Aigle selection are presently placed 11th after harvesting 18points in 17 matches. They sit six points above the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Victoria United completed a clean sweep in Garoua when it defeated Gazelle FA 1-0 on Sunday, barely a week after stunning host Coton Sport with a 2-0 beating on matchday 16 last Wednesday.
