Bilingualism commission SG highlights multiculturalism as vector of peace, dev’t.

This during the institution’s monthly Multiculturalism Day. The Commission scribe stated that the beauty and attraction of what Cameroon is to citizens and the world is best enjoyed through its cultural richness.

On the gains of celebrating multiculturalism, he said, “our different cultures a lot of wealth for this country. We benefit a lot by having many cultures in the country. If you blend all these cultures, you will certainly come out with something extraordinarily good for everybody”.

Dr Chi Asafor noted that every culture in Cameroon, “…has an aspect that is borrowed from some other culture”, noting that “… if you imagine over 250 cultures existing side by side, borrowing from each other, I think that in no distant future, we might arrive at what the President of the Republic calls the synthesis of cultures”.

Such a unique mix of several cultures in a bilingual country, he said, makes for huge development potential that must be fully maximized. 

Dr Chi Asafor stated that under the leadership of NCPBM, President, Peter Mafany Musonge, the Commission has also continued to drum the vital role of multiculturalism in harmonious living, peace and development.

The Secretary General reminded staff of the Commission to be frontline promoters of multiculturalism. He said the NCPBM should not only be seen promoting multiculturalism but practicing it as an example to the entire nation. He said the Commission is living multiculturalism.

“…we are expected to preach the gospel of multiculturalism, that is the peaceful co-existence of over 250 cultures of this country. But if we are only preaching, people may not understand that we are serious,” he stated. 

He recalled that the President of the NCPBM instituted the Multiculturalism Day in 2021. He noted that is has become a tradition observed every last Friday for the month with staff obliged to put on any traditional attire from the country’s four cultural zones of their choice.

A collection of delicacies from across the country were also displayed during the event. According to Dr Chi Asafor, Cameroon’s rich cuisine is also an aspect of multiculturalism with huge touristic potential,

Through such actions, the bilingualism commission, he underscored, is constantly sending across a message to the nation on the need to celebrate cultures. 

Unlike others editions of the Multiculturalism Day, that of July 2026, the SG disclosed, was used to initiated new staff into the workings of the NCPBM.
