Flood-provoked landslide kills pregnant woman, two others in Limbe.

Reports hold that ground flattened a building, comprising several apartments in a compound where they were living. 

Locals said the three women were covered by ground, following the incident at Mbende neigbourhood. 

The three corpses, locals said, were pulled from the ground before being taken to the Limbe Regional Hospital Mortuary.

Yesterday’s resulting floods and mudslides also hit other low-lying areas, with Down Beach among the worst affected. 

The Guardian Post gathered that patients were evacuated from the Down Beach PMI Clinic, amid surging rain water. The rains submerged neighbourhoods and cut off roads within the city.

Other areas also terribly affected included Church Street and the vicinity around BEAC Limbe. Amateur images and videos also emerged yesterday showing homes and offices that were flooded.

The mud and sludge covered most roads and streets within the city. The main access way into the city from Mile Four, was temporarily blocked early yesterday. Economic activities and transport activities were also largely paralysed.

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, of Fako, Engelbert Viang Mekala, convened an emergency crisis meeting yesterday to address immediate health needs, water safety, and aid for vulnerable populations. 

As at yesterday, the Army Rescue Unit in the city, had issued urgent warnings to residents in high-risk, sloped, or low-lying zones to evacuate without delay. The service is said to have warned that further landslides are expected if the rains persist. 

Speaking to the Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV, yesterday, the City Mayor of Limbe, Dr Paul Efome Ngale, regretted the deaths recorded. 

He said the City Council was working to provide relief aid and to also clear blocked gutters, while other actions will be taken to ensure the safety of the population. 

Limbe is historically vulnerable to flooding and landslides between June and August. Experts say the situation is because of the poor drainage and its closeness to the Atlantic Ocean, coupled with the numerous rivers in the city. 

Some studies hold that annually, 100 homes are flooded and five landslides occur in the city. The studies have blamed the situation on poor waste disposal and disorderly urbanisation.

One of the worst tragedies that hit the city was in 2001, when floods and landslides killed 93 people and destroyed 154 houses.
